Staten Island Advance

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Perhaps you already know about the latest facility focused on service to seniors that has opened on Staten Island, but just in case you do not, I stopped by and want to share my own observations. It is called Park Lane at Sea View.
Not too many years ago, after passing the gate house, I drove along the same winding road bordered by ancient trees to attend meetings at an old military-styled building that was referred to as the "nurses quarters." What a surprise when my eyes spotted the same building transformed by the magic of architects into an elegant, inviting structure.
Entering the main lobby, as I approached a concierge desk, services director Maureen Palumba spotted me and was gracious enough to not only take me on a tour, but answered so many questions simply and clearly.
There is, of course, the elevator. Good news for tired legs. Washing machines and dryers on each floor are appealing. Not the ones we used to enjoy for a quarter, but engineered to accept bills so if one is without change anxiety and annoyance can be avoided. (Their brochure indicates that meals, housekeeping and laundry service is available for an additional monthly fee, but I did not inquire about that service).
Windows are large and easily opened, guaranteed to let a lot of light in, bound to uplift spirits. Yes, tenants can control their own heat and air conditioning and it looks as if those walls are solid enough so that if there is a hearing impediment an individual can turn the TV as high as he/she wishes without bothering a neighbor.
It is comforting to know that privacy can be maintained, but also that staff is on board just for a friendly tap on the door to make certain all is well. Speaking of staff, I am told that, as it is in the other similar facilities on the Island, a nurse will be available for visitation daily.
There is lots of outdoor space for walking, but if that is not your thing, a fitness center is on hand to keep those muscles stretched and strong.
The apartments are well designed and each one different. Every one of them has a small kitchen fitted with an electric stove, refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher and cabinets. So, if you want to whip up a quick meal for yourself you can, but if you prefer company there is a common dining room where one can play the lady/gentleman and be served.
Yes there is a common room. For those who enjoy the stimulation of conversation, the competition of games, the pleasantness of sharing a concert or TV or even just reading while other voices meld into the background there is a spot. It is warm, friendly and comfortable and for those of us who remember, it stimulates a chuckle for it is called the "The Rumpus Room". I did spot a few quiet reading areas and noted the lovely library.
If you are still driving, parking on-site is not a problem, but if you are enjoying the relaxation of using the public buses for your traveling that service is available.
The apartments are for rent. Are you eligible? Well, you and your co-applicant must be 62 years of age. There is a minimum/maximum income range. There is no application fee. Preference will be given to New York City residents.
You can call 718-442-4301 for more information or applications may be requested by mail from: Park Lane at Sea View, 11 Park Place, Suite 1705, New York, NY 10007 (Include a self-addressed envelope with your request.)
